WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL OAPA WEBSITE!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The mission of the Oklahoma Academy of Physician Assistants is to secure and strengthen the Physician  Assistant profession in Oklahoma through advocacy, promotion and continuing medical education.  It is our goal to have all PAs in the state active in the organization.  The OAPA board meets every other month and welcomes input from its members.  We have several committees to serve the organization and would love for the general membership to participate.  These committees are: Legislative and Governmental Affairs, CME, Leadership Affairs and Awards, Membership Affairs, Physician Assistant Relations, and Public Education.

The past year has been a year of change and growth for the OAPA.  A strategic planning committee was organized to promote a positive direction for our future.   This year we will be focusing on achieving the goals that were outlined in those meetings.  This website serves as the main communication from the OAPA as we are working to conserve costs.   It can also be utilized by members for networking and to strengthen the community of PAs in the state of Oklahoma.  We are dedicated to the future of our profession and welcome your involvement.

Sincerely,

Allison Garrison, M.H.S., PA-C

OAPA President 2011

"SB 134 allows for PAs to deliver medical care in a state of declared emergency without their supervising physician present (and instead using any MD or DO present for supervision without having to go through the normal hoops at the medical board). Right now PAs cannot practice without the communication of their supervising physician. As you can imagine, this could be quite difficult in an emergency when communication services would be down/tied up. The Good Samaritan Act allows PAs and all medical providers to practice in immediate life-threatening situations only. It doesn't cover for first aide or the days of aftermath such as a large tornado or bombing type situation where victims may need care in the days following the initial insult. I am very passionate about this legislation and have worked diligently to get this going. It has passed the committee in the Senate and will be heard on the Senate floor this Wednesday."

Allison Garrison, M.H.S., PA-C (OAPA President Elect)
