Karen Smith & Sara Gadd: Human Trafficking Lecture

Karen Smith, Human Trafficking/OCAT Project Director, Family Safety Center

Karen Smith is the Director of the Oklahoma Coalition Against Human Trafficking with the Family Safety Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Karen has been with the Family Safety Center for over six years and has over 40 years of experience in the human services field working with children, youth, and families that have experienced trauma. Karen has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Arkansas. Karen previously served as the Director of Camp HOPE America, Tulsa; Director of the Child Care Resource Center, Tulsa; Planner at the Community Service Council; and Child Development Specialist with the Okmulgee County Health Department.

Sara Gadd Human Trafficking Program Manager, Mission Integration Ascension

Sara Gadd is the Human Trafficking Program Manager for Ascension St. John. In this
role she has spent the last 5+ years managing the Ascension St. John Human
Trafficking Education and Response Program to train healthcare providers to identify
and respond to the needs of victims of human trafficking. Ms. Gadd is the chair of the
Oklahoma Coalition Against Human Trafficking (OCAT) in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area. She
holds a Master of Arts Degree in Human Services: Marriage and Family.

Human Trafficking: Trauma-Informed Advocacy, Treatment and Community Collaboration

Objectives:

  • Examine how healthcare providers have the opportunity to be frontline caregivers for those that have experienced human trafficking.
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of human trafficking.
  • Describe how to approach patients/clients in a trauma informed manner.
  • Design an effective plan of care.
  • Describe how to advocate through strong community collaboration.
