John Tompkins, MD

Dr. Tompkins entered private practice in January 1987 with S. F. Tompkins, M.D. Where they practiced together until July 1998. He began working on a part-time basis at the VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City in March 1987. Dr. Tomkins joined full-time faculty of University of Oklahoma Orthopedic Surgery Department in July 1998, working half-time at OU Medical Center and half-time at VAMC. Much later he became a full-time orthopedist at VAMC.

Dr. Tomkins was deployed to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center from April 2008 to October 2008. He became the interim Chief of Surgery of the VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City in September 2010 and served as the Chief of Surgery from January 2012 until October 2016.
He continued as a full-time staff orthopedic surgeon at the VAMC until He separated from federal service in November 2017.

In October 2018 he began working as a part-time orthopedic surgeon at Mercy Hospital Ardmore, where he provided call coverage through December 2021.

Dr. Tomkins also had clinical privileges to provide orthopedic call coverage at McAlester Regional Health Center in McAlester, Oklahoma as a contract orthopedic surgeon until 2021.

In March 2024, he became a contract wound care physician for Healogics with privileges at Integris Health in Oklahoma.

Hip Pathology

Objectives:

  • Identify the causes of common causes of hip pathology.
  • Demonstrate the physical examination of the hip.
  • Consider the imaging studies for common causes of hip pain.
